While tampons and pads are the most common menstrual protection products, I am a big fan of menstrual cups. These cups are such a wonderful feminine hygiene item that collects the menstrual fluid in it instead of absorbing the blood. The cup is directly inserted into the vagina where it comfortably sits to collect the fluid. Once the cup is full (which usually takes around 8 hours), you can remove and wash it to use it again.
Before we go deep in discussion, let’s first point out the 3 most dominating characteristics of menstrual cups….
• Menstrual cups are easy to insert, wash and reinsert.
• They are comfortable, nontoxic and reusable.
• They are good for you and for mother earth as well!
Feeling impressed with the good traits of using a menstrual cup? Thinking of making a switch? Wait before you make a final switch, you must make yourself abreast of some facts associated to menstrual cups….
Here are five vital points that all women should know about the menstrual cup:
1. They are reusable -
The best and basic fact about using a cup is that they are reusable. You can use your cup over and over and over again. One cup can last long for a decade around if not lifelong. However, from hygiene point of view it is recommended to change them after ever year. So, now no more monthly piles of tampon and pads in the trash bin!
2. They are environmentally friendly -
Since menstrual cups are reusable, they are kind to environment too. They are typically made of medical grade silicone and they don’t contain bleach, artificial fragrances, or other toxins/chemicals unlike tampons, panty-liners and pads. Therefore, they don’t cause any discomfort or irritation in your vagina. With a menstrual cup, you're taking care of your body and our precious planet!
3. They can be tailored to suit your body's needs -
Your comfort is your priority, particularly during the period. You can adjust your cup to suit your comfort. You can cut the "little thing" at the bottom of the cup as short as possible so that you may not feel its presence while sitting, dancing, walking or doing any other activity. Figure out what feels best for you and your vagina.
4. They need not to be changed after every couple of hours –
With cups, you need not think as much about changing as with pads or tampon. You can leave it longer. In simple words, you don’t have to take it out every time you visit the bathroom. It can secure you for 9 hours long even during the heavy flow days.
5. They can be called measuring cup too -
Since your cups collect the fluid instead of absorbing, you can see exactly see and measure how much blood your body leaves. It helps you learn more about your menstrual cycle.
Having said all these, now it goes without saying that menstrual cups are many times better than regular tampons and pads! Make a switch now!
